Interview: Of Charcoal and Creating on Canvas

Hope is a waking dream... I could not agree more because from hope dreams are realized. A hope for a better tomorrow, and sometimes that's all we need.

NAIROBI, Kenya, August 23, 2024/-- The great Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky's bold claim, “Beauty will save the world,” is becoming self-evident as each day passes. Beauty is within and without; with its viewer, purveyor, and creator emphasizing it. Our guest, a creative presents this deeper sense beyond external aesthetics in his art.

In Today's edition, John guides us through his heightened perception of people, objects, and meaning of things by creating on canvas.

Let Kikao begin...

[Question 1] John, welcome to Kikao. Tell us more about yourself.

I am John Mungai, the founder of artscopedia arts. I have had a love for art for as long as I can remember, since from drawing in school as a child. My dream is to become a successful and impactful artist in my generation; speaking through my creations and inspiring others.

[Question 2] As a young visual artist finding footing within a fast-paced Kenyan art scene, what has been your experience?

My experience as a Kenyan artist has been somewhat wavy... Good, but challenging. Art supplies are quite expensive, however, the love for creating keeps me going.

I would also want to mention the great support I have received from my fellow artists such as Mwas Githinji, Felistus Mwenda (artbyfeliz), and Mamoun Hussein (Artbyfullmoon). I draw inspiration from other creators.

[Question 3] In your work there is a lot of figurative art and charcoal. Why? And how would you describe your style of art?

Yes. I have particularly been fascinated by figurative art. The human body and its diverse ways of passing emotions to viewers through poses and expressions. African culture has also had an influence on my art style, incorporating symbols and patterns in my artwork.

My main art media are charcoal pencils, normal and coloured, as well as, acrylic paints.

[Question 4] Have you exhibited anywhere? And what is you ideal space or places to showcase your work?

Unfortunately, I have not exhibited anywhere before, but I would like to in the future. My desire is to have my art hang on an art gallery. However, I have done a couple of commissioned artwork.

First of all, I appreciate all stakeholders that support local talent and give it a platform to showcase its offerings. I think it is a really good way to give to society and change people's lives. And I am open to any partnerships with art lovers.

[Question 6] “Hope is a waking dream.” Is this statement true to you?

Hope is a waking dream... I could not agree more because from hope dreams are realized. A hope for a better tomorrow, and sometimes that's all we need.

[Question 7] On a Sunday afternoon, what would John be up to?

I spend most of my free time reading art books. At the moment I am studying George Bridgman's anatomy art book. I also watch a lot of art tutorials on YouTube from artists like proko and Mad charcoal. This helps me brainstorm and come up with ideas for future projects.
