Interview: Starting in Immersive Digital Art

KAMPALA, Uganda, April 23, 2024/-- Nina Simone once said that, what she hoped was to be completely herself, so that her audiences and even people who she met are profoundly confronted with what she was inside and out, honestly. And in this way they have to see things about themselves, immediately. Today, I hope Jalia's perspective broadens yours.

[Question 1] Jalia welcome to Kikao. Introduce yourself?
I am a self-taught digital artist from Uganda, a daughter, sister, wife, and mother. I use digital art as tool to express myself artistically. Right now I am specializing in digital abstract art.
[Question 2] The pace at which today’s world is transitioning into digital content, and art in particular is amazing. Where does one start?
It's important to have basic training in using digital art apps. One can start by defining the target audience that you're developing the content for; then understand the content limitation, before creating high-quality and engaging content; with the best platform to work with in mind.
Moreover, build a content library, develop a content schedule, and lastly optimize the content for each social media platform.
[Question 3] The extended reality (XR) future; comprising of augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR) is here. How can one use these immersive tools to amplify their creative expression?
By using them to be authentic in our creative expression, also by building online platforms and communities which would later generate brand new ideas. These would turn into digital products or content that could be monetized.
[Question 4] Are there opportunities for African youths in this space?
There are variety of youth opportunities like digital content creation, writing, online networks, and online market places to sell digital content, and so much more.



[Question 5] How is the Ugandan art / entertainment scene(s)?
Uganda art scene is a vibrant and dynamic field, it has seen significant growth and transformation over the past decades.
In the 1990s, the capital city Kampala was home to just one commercial art gallery. Today the city boasts of at least six galleries reflecting a broader trend across Africa.
[Question 6] “Atarakutwere ati, shwera kahara ka nanka.” Is a Runyakore proverb loosely meaning, a spectator plays better than the player. What is your interpretation of this saying?

[Question 7] All work and no play makes Jalia a dull girl. What does Jalia do apart from art?
I always take long walks to clear my mind and love listening to good music.
